1. The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has unanimously passed new set of tougher sanctions against North Korea( Textile Exports and Crude Oil imports)

  • It’s 9th UNSC Sanction against North Korea since 2006 .
  • Reason- North Korea recently conducted its 6th and most powerful Nuclear Test on 3rd September2017.

2. Saudi Arabia has suspended dialogue with Qatar

  • Both countries had decided to hold talks (after US President Trump spoke.
  • Separately with the leaders of Saudi Arabia, Qatar & UAE,)to resolve the Qatar crisis.

3. Pakistan’s fifth nuclear power plant inaugurated- at Chashma in Mianwali district of the Punjab province

  • It has been developed in collaboration with China.

4. Asian Development Bank( ADB) will provide a $152 Mn to Nepal

  • For implementation & enhancement of its power transmission and distribution.

5. EU ( European Union) Withdrawal Bill passed in British Parliament

  • The 1972 European Communities Act which took the UK into the then European.
  • Economic Community, will get repealed by this bill.
  • Now the bill has to pass second test.

6. Sri Lankan Deputy Tourism Minister Arundika Fernando sacked by President Maithripala Sirisena

  • Reason- He was allegedly defying the party leadership.
  • Commercial Capital of Sri Lanka = Colombo ( Also the largest city).
  • Official Capital of Sri lanka= Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte.

7. World’s most attractive financial centre = LONDON

  • According to Z/Yen global financial centres index.
  • 2nd position: New York.
  • 3rd Position: Hong Kong.

8. Halimah Yacob- Sworn-in as the 8th President of Singapore

  • She is Singapore’s 1st Female President.
  • She’s of Malay ethnicity.
  • She had no opponent – She was certified by the Presidential Elections Commission as the only eligible candidate. Therefore, there was no election held.

ENVIRONMENT & ECOLOGY

1. The International Day for Preservation of Ozone Layer ( World Ozone Day)= 16th September

  • Theme for 2017 = ‘Caring for all life under the sun’.
  • Why on 16th Sept?? = To commemorate the date in 1987 on which the Montreal Protocol was signed on substances that deplete the ozone layer.

2. Sahara Forest Project

  • Launched by Jordan to turn desert land into farming land to produce food using sun and sea water.
  • Launched near the southern port city of Aqaba.

3. Hector’s Dolphin- Population has decreased by 80 % in last 50 years

  • Found in New- Zealand.
  • Report by “ Sea Shepherd” organization.

4. China is planning to ban petrol and diesel cars

  • To boost the use of electric vehicles.
  • France and Britain have already announced ban of Petrol and diesel vehicles from 2040.

ENTERTAINMENT

1. 74th Edition of Venice Film Festival concluded after 10 days

  • It is World’s Oldest Film Festival.

2. Book launched ” The Girl who takes an eye for an eye” by – David Lagercrantz.

SPORTS

1. Winners of 2017 US Open.

  • Rafael Nadal – Men’s Singles. (his third US Open title and his 16th Grand Slam title overall).
  • Sloane Stephens – Women’s Singles( World Ranking = 83) She was the Dark Horse.
  • Martina Hingis & Chan Yung-Jan – Women’s doubles title after defeating Lucie Hradecka & Katerina Siniakova.

2. Moscow Shotgun World Championships, Russia

  • Italy topped with nine gold medals and a total of 17 medals.

SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

1. ACID (The ASEAN Computer Emergency Response Team Incident Drill).- held in Vietnam

  • Where?- in Hanoi, Danang, and Ho Chi Minh City.
  • 2017 was 12th year of ACID.
  • Objective- To manage challenges in the cyber realm in areas like incident response, confidence building, and cyber capacity building.

2. Robot Dog Hana-Chan developed by Japanese Startup “ Next Technology”

  • Can smell feet to detect odour.

3. Discovery of BORON on Mars- Scientists have concluded that it may had been habitable once.

4. The Brane Craft- an ultra-thin spacecraft to remove space debris

  • It is being developed by US-based Aerospace Corporation.

5. First map of water trapped in uppermost layer of Moon’s soil created – by Scientists from Brown University.

1. Shaheen joint Air Force training of China and Pakistan

  • Venue: China

2. Turkey’s 1st major Weapons Deal with Moscow

  • To buy S-400 missile defence systems.

3. INDRA 2017

  • First tri-service military exercise of India & Russia.
  • Venue – Russia

1. Patrick Hickey ( involved in a scandal)resigned from his position on the International Olympic Committee executive board.

2. Longest-serving Prince of Wales in history= Prince Charles( 68 years old).

3. Graydon Carter resigned from the post of the editor of Vanity Fair.

4. Peter Thomson appointed as First Special Envoy for Oceans

  • Appointed by U.N Secretary General Antonio- Guterres.
  • He is the Outgoing President of UNGA ( UN General Assembly).

  • Rank 1: San Francisco (the ‘Silicon Valley’); Rank 2: New York

6. World Economic Forum’s (WEF) published Global Human Capital Index (GHCI) 2017

  • Rank 1: Norway; Rank 2: Finland; Rank 3: Switzerland.
