SkillWiz Campus Stories: Journey to HCL

Our first campus story covers the journey of Amandeep Sachan to HCL. He is in the final year of engineering at IIIT Gwalior and takes interest in Data Structures & Algorithms, Web Development and Data Science. Let’s go through his journey from preparing to acing his campus placement. I started preparing from June 2017 for campus placements. Since I am from Information Technology branch, so we didn’t have to give any written exam during the recruitment process. Usually companies ask technical MCQs and Coding questions hosted on some platform. They can also ask you to write code in your own compiler. HCL followed the following procedure during their recruitment drive in our campus: Difficulty level of coding questions were easy and medium. I got the questions from topics like Graph and Sorting. Difficulty level of questions in interview round depends on panel who is taking your interview. Questions may vary easy to hard difficulty level. But they don’t expect you to answer all the questions. They want to know how you approach to solve the question. Duration can be from 10 minutes to 40 minutes. I revised lots of things. For an CS/IT student, subjects like Data Structures & Algorithms, OOPS, OS, DBMS and CN are very important in placements. So, I revised important things that I marked during my preparation. I have thorough understanding of programming languages like C++, Python and Javascript. One of the most asked question in Technical interview is – “Do you have any project/internship?”. Here comes the importance of internship, because it shows how much prepared you are for professional environment. I have been interning with SkillWiz from last 15 months. It helped me a lot to gain professional experience and chance to learn strategy of writing production level code. Before joining SkillWiz, I didn’t had any experience in live projects. While working for SkillWiz, I explored various web technologies like NodeJs, AngularJS & MongoDB and further explored about Data Science as well. My internship taught me about how to coordinate with a team and most importantly – time management. I was always encouraged and supported by the team to learn more and dream big which really motivates me. I got to know about application development life cycle from planning phase to deployment phase which was not possible without SkillWiz and it helped me a lot during my interview. Extracurricular activities play an important role in the interview process. I was a part of various extra curricular activities and being a part of extracurricular activities help you to become confident and develop leadership skills. Obviously, it boosts you during interview. I have been the President of Rotaract Club-IIITM, organinzed national level events like Inter-IIIT Techathlon and Institute Industry Interaction. Now coming to company specific strategic preparations, I did not follow any special strategy during this period. The target was to learn and understand concepts of DSA as much as possible. Online coding platforms helped me there. Other necessary arrangements were made by the placement cell. They also organized mock tests for the practice before the campus recruitment. I was always prepared for the worst before the campus hiring of any company. It helped to make me feel comfortable during the whole recruitment process. For the upcoming batches aiming for HCL I will recommend to start from the fundamentals of DSA and dive deep into its concepts. Use coding platforms and discussion forums to prepare for CS/IT companies. Don’t spend more than sufficient in any particular question while preparting for campus placement. Try to learn from the mistakes done by others. Every topic is important for good companies, you can’t guess from where interviewer can ask questions. But start from the topics which are mostly asked in the tests and then explore further. Don’t neglect the subjects like OOPS, OS, DBMS and CN during your preparation. Revise the basics of these subjects thoroughly and questions asked in previous years and this would help you to ace your placement. By Amandeep Sachan, IIIT Gwalior

TATA Power Interview Experience – PI Series: 1

TATA Power Interview Experience – PI Series 1 As interview is the final and key step for any recruitment or selection process, Team SkillWiz has started the **PI Series** Blogs, that’ll help you in understanding the different types of Interviews, and ways to tackle them.**Note:** Every act in the PI series is a real life experience shared by the Candidates, and published in the Blogs after their Permission The first Act in the series is for **TATA Power.****Scenario:-**There were 3 panel members:**I:** HR**I2:** Construction Head**I3:** Deputy to construction head**Interview time:** 25-30 minutes **I: What is the meaning of your name?****Me:** Sir, Mayukh means light. Actually, there is a whole story of names in my family. **I: Do tell.****Me:** My mother’s name is Jyotsna, which means ‘light of moon’ so she named her sons Mayank, meaning ‘moon’ and Mayukh meaning ‘light’. So, our name combined meant hers. **I: Who is the Placement Head in your college?****Me:** Dr. XXXX Kumar **I: What was the placement % last year?****Me:** Overall it was more than 90%. **I: No, what was the placement % of your branch last year?****Me:** Almost 65-70% Mechanical students were placed last year, but the remaining had gone for academic placements through GATE or Govt. exams. **I: What did you seniors did who didn’t get placed?****Me:** Most of them went for higher studies through GATE. Remaining few chose to prepare for GATE once again so as to secure a good rank for various PSUs. **I2: What is the difference between Supercritical & Subcritical plant efficiency?****Me:** About 12-15% but Supercritical plants are more complex to be installed and maintained. **I: Have you been placed earlier this year?****Me:** I was selected for L&T Technology Services in September. **I: Don’t you think you should have given this interview opportunity to some other unplaced batch mate?****Me:** Generally, the placed students are not allowed to sit for all the companies. TATA Power being a special case, since it written round was conducted before L&T recruitment, so I was allowed to sit. **I: Why TATA Power and not L&T Tech?****Me:** About 4 of my relatives work in NTPC and I have spent most of my vacations in and around Power Plants. There was always a curiosity as to what happens behind that plant walls. Most people take Mechanical because of their interest in Automobiles but my primary reason was Power Plants only. **I: Suppose you have planned a holiday with your family and an MD visit happens on that day only, what will you do?****Me:** I’ll try to judge the situation. As the MD himself will be coming, I think I will postpone my family program for a few days. However, if some Regional Manager would have been coming I would have asked myself that whether my presence is immediately required or not, then would have requested my boss to grant me leave. **I: What if boss had said no?****Me:** The person senior to me would always be much more experienced, so I would go with his decision but only after explaining all my concerns clearly to him. It is important that you make the person before you see things from your perspective. **I: Ok, but Mayukh you are willing to leave a white collar job for us (L&T) and we will turn your white shirt black in our Ash Plant. Won’t you regret it 4-5 years down the line?****Me:** My uncle was posted in Ash Plant for about 3 years and then worked near boilers too. So, I understand the situation a little bit. But, I am confident that I will be more satisfied near those extreme conditions than some white collar job because there is a strong passion for it. **I: What will you do tomorrow morning if you are rejected from this interview?Me:** Sir might relate to this (there was a gentleman from Bengal in the panel) but I am ardent fan of Swami Vivekananda. There was a beautiful quote that he said “Arise, Awake & stop not till the goal is reached”. So, would do that only. Will try to prepare for next thing from tomorrow onwards. **I2: Do you have any plans for higher studies?Me:** No sir (He was looking through my mark sheets), it may seem from my grades that I may be more theoretically inclined but I have always found the practical applications and their operations more interesting. Hence, I am looking forward to start working right away. **I3: Mayukh, you are good in studies, look smart and well spoken too. But you must have felt some short-comings which you must work upon.Me:** Till 2nd year in my engineering, I was kind of an introvert guy. My fluency was not that good too. After that, I felt I need to give importance to my soft & social skills as well. So, I started joining different societies and did an internship with an Education startup called SkillWiz. Gradually, due to them my personality developed and since you too have said so, I feel my work reaped off. **I: Good Mayukh, I am very much impressed by you but we are looking for individuals all across India from Mumbai, Chennai, etc. So, will tell your result to your college after considering them too.Me:**Sure Sir thanks. GENERAL ADDITION – VEDIC MATHEMATICS SERIES: 1

Vedic Mathematics! What is it? A tool? A topic? Or an entirely different subject?? Well, the answer would be “none of these.” India is country that has produced extremely proud set of Scientists, Mathematicians, Astrologers, Doctors, and many more. Sushruta, father of Plastic Surgery, has been born in India. Aryabhatta, the great mathematician and astronomer was born in India in 476 AD. This list is vast, and beyond our scope of knowledge. Their contribution has been immense to the world. Honestly, none of us can explain all about the vedas, but SkillWiz team has decided to bring you some of the most essential elements of it, starting from the Vedic Mathematics. It contains lots and lots of theories and formulae, but we’ll concentrate only on a few which are essential, and will help you in any entrance exam. In the very first blog of Vedic Mathematics Series, we’ll focus entirely on the ADDITION OF NUMBERS:- ADDITION BY ADDING NUMBERS FROM LEFT TO RIGHTGenerally we add numbers starting from right, and if the sum exceeds 10, we carry the tens digit to the immediate left in the series, and proceed. But in this method, we’ll do the opposite. To understand it, we’ll take the example of two 3-digit numbers (423 + 222) Steps:- For more details, refer to the following example. ADDITION BY ROUNDING OF NUMBERS Caution: THIS METHOD IS TO BE USED ONLY WHEN GIVEN NUMBERS ARE CLOSE TO ANY SUITABLE NUMBER TO WHICH THEY CAN BE ROUNDED OFF. To understand it, we’ll take the example of two 3-digit numbers(622 + 789) Steps:- By using 600 and 800:- By using 620 and 790:- For more details, refer to the following example. Though, it may look tough and lengthy in the first look, but once you have practiced it enough. It takes only 5-6 seconds to do the summation. This method can be extended up to any amount of numbers of any length, can can be very accurate. Sometimes in MCQs, you need only approximate answers, and this method has proved it be very useful there. For your Practice, here are a few question that you can try :1) 345+4562) 765+3753) 890+3944) 817+45675) 85934+75830And that marks the end of the first blog in Vedic Mathematics Series.…..Stay Connected for more “Vedic Mathematics Series blogs” Upcoming Blog : CApsules : 1 Image Credits : http://desktop-backgrounds-org.s3.amazonaws.com/cool-mathematics-high-definition_5.jpg

SUCCESS STORY- SERIES 1 (COGNIZANT)

SAYANJIT ROYCOGNIZANT PLACED2021 PASSOUTKIIT UNIVERSITY, BHUBANESHWAR “I still vividly remember the day I got my offer letter from Cognizant. It was just like a dream come true and all of my hard work finally paid off, ” says Sayanjit Roy who graduated with his Masters in Electrical Engineering at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT). Let’s hear his success story in his own words. To break into product-based companies, you need to have strong coding skills. This is something that will help you immensely in the interview process and also when it comes time for your workday. To really show them what they are getting with a person like yourself on their team, make sure to brush up on DBMS (Database Management System), NETWORKS, and OSs (Operating Systems). These three things all play an important role in how we interact with technology as well as building products based on these technologies so be prepared! I started my journey with SkillWiz in the 2nd year itself, however, if you haven’t begun your prep yet, there is nothing to worry about. This platform is so well-equipped with a myriad of gamification modules – from basic to advanced, that with little effort and consistent practice, you can ace your game in no time.  Now, let me give you a brief illustration of how I went on with my preparation:  I studied and prepared in an organized manner, which led to my success. In the platform, I analyzed metrics like class performance, individual student progress, strengths, and weaknesses that helped shape how I prepped from mistakes while also learning new things through the discussion forum. With Facebook features on the website such as motivational quotes or discussions among peers; it was easy for me to become more confident after this experience.  I booked a 1-1 session with my mentor, an Industry Expert for the past ten years. His valuable guidance on different companies and their specific requirements were really useful! He also advised me to prepare for HR rounds; although they’re usually basic ones, I didn’t wanna take any chances so I took help from him. I got my resume built using the Smart Resume feature which automatically suggests company-specific keywords and customizes your CV accordingly.  I was not very proficient in Quantitative Aptitude. The category-based differentiation of questions helped me focus on the areas I was lacking. The company-specific packages have also given me a clear picture of what companies are actually looking for. With the Cognite Game Package, I got adept in quant, verbal ability, and logical reasoning in no time. By the end of my sixth semester, I reached Level 5.  I finally gained the confidence to solve mock exams. Until the second month, I was stuck in Level 1 but as soon as a third month seeped in, I jumped from Level 1 all the way up to level 3! Plus SkillWiz gamification of modules is more fun when you are consistent enough with your practice and have completed 100+ questions for each module which doesn’t require any prerequisites.  Leadership is the key to success. I had a strategic plan in mind, but it was only through trial and error that I found what would work for me best; so never stop trying new things! To get into my target companies, I applied these strategies: firstly by analyzing their strengths on Leaderboard (which gave me an idea of how they were scoring), secondly with learning other languages such as Javascript API and React JS during my free time- which helped prepare myself even more thoroughly for interviews at Capgemini & Cognizant. So use your own creativity when coming up with a strategy because you can’t win if you don’t try. If you want to ace your interview, SkillWiz is the best way to go. I feel there are no alternatives out there that can compare with its features and accessibility for students in their final year of college. With consistency, perseverance, and hard work nothing is impossible–especially when digital learning platforms like this one exist! It was a great experience and yes, SkillWiz played a key role in making me Industry ready.

SUCCESS STORY- SERIES 2 (L&T Technologies)

MADHUSUDAN BARL&T PLACED2021 PASSOUTELECTRICAL ENGINEERGNIT KOLKATA This is the story of an ordinary student who did the extraordinary. Madhusudan Bar, an electrical engineering student at GNIT, with dreams big enough to rival his ambitions, in one of India’s leading manufacturing conglomerates, L&T Technologies, within a year of his SkillWiz program commencement.  Let’s hear what he has to say about not only how it shaped him as a person but also helped him get placed into this venture:  “The journey started when I enrolled on the SkillWiz program. It was a rigorously challenging yet rewarding experience.  My passion for electronics and designing chipsets, circuit boards have been there for years. However, not many companies are there that help electrical engineering aspirants with their placement strategy. Luckily my college helped me join the SkillWiz platform, and since then, there was no looking back.  When I joined this platform, I first explored their Skill Enhancement section; it is tailor-made for engineering aspirants like us – one can easily begin this without any prerequisites.  The Skill Enhancement is divided into three modules: Core Engineering: This module is designed and customized for any Core Engineering student looking for a career in technology. It has 500+ questions based on multiple topics; there are five levels to complete where students can experience modern pedagogy.  Cognitive: This product provides high-end content in quant-verbal-logical reasoning, based on long-term research on industry interview questions.  Novice to Ninja: N2N is aimed at coding aspirants to reach the advanced level of programming. Although I don’t know about coding, looking at the curriculum, it is well understood that a lot of focus has been put on data structures and algorithms, which happens to be every interviewer’s favorite topic. Their teaching methodology has a lot of uber-cool experiments like gamification of concepts, discussion forums, and super-innovative leaderboards. Imagine watching not only your progress but of your entire class? I could not only learn from my peer’s progress but also gather incredible insights from their performance, for eg: which chapters should I be studying first, how much time/attention is required to spend on different modules, etc. It actually solves half of your study plan problem.  Apart from these, I also availed of their 1-1 mentorship sessions, resume building and validating, and mock interviews. After every module, I would go for the mentor-mentee sessions; it further cleared my understanding of each concept. The mentors also shared their industry knowledge and project experience with us. Mock interviews were a major factor in helping me secure my job, as 80% of questions asked at my interview came from mock interviews that we did here! Now, let me give you a deeper insight into my campus placement preparation. If you like it, you can apply it too: SkillWiz helped me land my dream job even before the completion of my engineering course. I got to choose from multiple pre-placement offers.  I have tried SkillWiz and I am impressed with their pedagogy. All of the courses are based on US standards, which are transparent and insightful. SkillWiz Campus Stories: Journey to COGNIZANT

“Hard work is the key to success.” This is the aphorism that Mohit Verma Tirumalaraju, a CSE student of Lovely Professional University, who got placed in Cognizant as a Program Analyst, after overcoming every hurdle in the most heroic way, lives by. Let’s listen to Verma’s story in his own words.  Not to mention, the optimum number of students this year went to play for Olympics from LPU itself and were accoladed by a number of renowned people, including Virat Kohli, this proves that LPU is braving formidable odds with its power-packed performance in every field.  “I had always been interested in computer science, but it wasn’t until my third year of college that I started thinking about what comes next. As an engineering student, you have to start considering your options because only very few companies hire fresh graduates with limited programming skills.  At this point, panic and confusion set in after realizing the lack of job opportunities for software engineers like me due to COVID – which means reduced company budgets and increased competition concerning jobs.  With all these factors going against me, combined with not having enough experience coding before graduating into an oversaturated industry field, everything seemed hopeless; however, determined nevertheless! Life is supposed to be a series of trials and tribulations hoping that the next one will go well. That’s what I thought when faced with such adversities until some miracle happened during our college seminar on campus. They discussed how SkillWiz would host a pilot batch for the upcoming placement drive for 3rd-year students.  It then dawned upon me that this could very well be my turn at success as I can easily brush up my knowledge of Java, Data Structure, DBMS, Aptitude, Algorithms, competitive coding, and Dynamic programming. I looked no further and enrolled myself in the program.  Here is a detailed illustration of how I prepared for my campus placements in six months:  First Month: During the first week, I invested a good amount of time exploring the platform, analyzing its features, and leveraging it in my best form. There were several metrics like overall class performance, individual student progress, strengths, and weaknesses, etc., that shaped my preparation, helped me learn from my mistakes, and others. The platform also had a discussion forum where students can post doubts, motivational quotes, talk to their peers and comment on their posts, just like Facebook.  A very important aspect of any campus placement preparation happens to be the focus on key areas like Data Structures, Binary systems, and Aptitude. SkillWiz had an entire section on Aptitude and Reasoning which thoroughly helped me throughout my preparation. I didn’t have to refer to any other book as the aptitude questions were comprehensive and met the industry standards.  Second Month: Slowly and steadily, I brushed up topics like DSA, OOPs, and DBMS. Since, during interviews, companies focus the most on coding rounds, I practiced writing codes in my compiler and got it verified by my mentors through test cases. This was a win-win situation as I improved my Java programming skills and got a mini exposure to industry-level coding. Initially, it was difficult as we were only taught C and SQL in our college. And C, despite being object-oriented programming, isn’t dynamic in nature like Java, so learning Java was one of the best decisions.   Third Month: After rigorous learning and practice for two months, I finally gained the confidence to solve the mocks. Until the second month, I was stuck in Level 1, but as the third month seeped in, I jumped from Level 1 to Level 3, in no time. Not to mention, SkillWiz gamification of modules is a lot more fun when you are consistent enough with your practice. Each of the modules contained 100+ questions, and the levels were constructed so that one requires no pre-requisites. You can be from any engineering background and simply dive in.  Fourth and Fifth Month: Now that I was thorough with most programming concepts, I began to analyze my previous mocks from the second month and tallied them with my present ones. I could see a drastic improvement in my progress in just a few months. I also leveraged the leaderboard and analyzed what my peers were doing. I tried to figure out their strong points and applied the top-scorers strategy to mine. It really worked well for me. During my free time, I also spent some time learning Javascript, APIs, and React JS. And trust me when I say this was one of the greatest reasons behind acing the interview of Infosys.  Sixth Month: By now, I was quite well-versed with computer science concepts. So, I thought of booking a 1-1 session with my mentor, an Industry Expert for the past ten years, to get some industry insights. His valuable guidance on different companies and their specific requirements were really useful. He also advised me to prepare for the HR rounds, as well. Although the HR round is usually a very basic one, and one need not prepare much for it, I didn’t wanna take any chances and further took help from my mentor over this. I also got my resume built with their Smart Resume feature. This automatically suggests the company-specific keywords and customizes your CV for different industries.  Finally, the placement drive began. I was nervous, but at the same time, I was confident enough to bag a good-paying job. For the upcoming batches, I would recommend them to study Data Structures and Algorithms well, especially the binary trees, as they are definitely the interviewers’ favorite.  If you are in your final year and want to ace your interview, SkillWiz is definitely the best platform to use. I feel there are no alternatives to SkillWiz . With consistency, perseverance, and hard work, nothing is impossible, especially when digital learning is so easily accessible to students.” By Mohit Verma Tirumalaraju, LPU PUNJAB
