Our first campus story covers the journey of Amandeep Sachan to HCL. He is in the final year of engineering at IIIT Gwalior and takes interest in Data Structures & Algorithms, Web Development and Data Science. Let’s go through his journey from preparing to acing his campus placement. I started preparing from June 2017 for campus placements. Since I am from Information Technology branch, so we didn’t have to give any written exam during the recruitment process. Usually companies ask technical MCQs and Coding questions hosted on some platform. They can also ask you to write code in your own compiler. HCL followed the following procedure during their recruitment drive in our campus: Difficulty level of coding questions were easy and medium. I got the questions from topics like Graph and Sorting. Difficulty level of questions in interview round depends on panel who is taking your interview. Questions may vary easy to hard difficulty level. But they don’t expect you to answer all the questions. They want to know how you approach to solve the question. Duration can be from 10 minutes to 40 minutes. I revised lots of things. For an CS/IT student, subjects like Data Structures & Algorithms, OOPS, OS, DBMS and CN are very important in placements. So, I revised important things that I marked during my preparation. I have thorough understanding of programming languages like C++, Python and Javascript. One of the most asked question in Technical interview is – “Do you have any project/internship?”. Here comes the importance of internship, because it shows how much prepared you are for professional environment. I have been interning with SkillWiz from last 15 months. It helped me a lot to gain professional experience and chance to learn strategy of writing production level code. Before joining SkillWiz, I didn’t had any experience in live projects. While working for SkillWiz, I explored various web technologies like NodeJs, AngularJS & MongoDB and further explored about Data Science as well. My internship taught me about how to coordinate with a team and most importantly – time management. I got to know about application development life cycle from planning phase to deployment phase which was not possible without SkillWiz and it helped me a lot during my interview. Extracurricular activities play an important role in the interview process. I was a part of various extra curricular activities and being a part of extracurricular activities help you to become confident and develop leadership skills. Obviously, it boosts you during interview. I have been the President of Rotaract Club-IIITM, organinzed national level events like Inter-IIIT Techathlon and Institute Industry Interaction. Now coming to company specific strategic preparations, I did not follow any special strategy during this period. The target was to learn and understand concepts of DSA as much as possible. Online coding platforms helped me there. Other necessary arrangements were made by the placement cell. They also organized mock tests for the practice before the campus recruitment. I was always prepared for the worst before the campus hiring of any company. It helped to make me feel comfortable during the whole recruitment process. For the upcoming batches aiming for HCL I will recommend to start from the fundamentals of DSA and dive deep into its concepts. Use coding platforms and discussion forums to prepare for CS/IT companies. Don’t spend more than sufficient in any particular question while preparting for campus placement. Try to learn from the mistakes done by others. Every topic is important for good companies, you can’t guess from where interviewer can ask questions. But start from the topics which are mostly asked in the tests and then explore further. Don’t neglect the subjects like OOPS, OS, DBMS and CN during your preparation. Actually, there is a whole story of names in my family. **I: Do tell.****Me:** My mother’s name is Jyotsna, which means ‘light of moon’ so she named her sons Mayank, meaning ‘moon’ and Mayukh meaning ‘light’. So, our name combined meant hers. **I: Who is the Placement Head in your college?****Me:** Dr. XXXX Kumar **I: What was the placement % last year?****Me:** Overall it was more than 90%. **I: No, what was the placement % of your branch last year?****Me:** Almost 65-70% Mechanical students were placed last year, but the remaining had gone for academic placements through GATE or Govt. exams. **I: What did you seniors did who didn’t get placed?****Me:** Most of them went for higher studies through GATE. Remaining few chose to prepare for GATE once again so as to secure a good rank for various PSUs. **I2: What is the difference between Supercritical & Subcritical plant efficiency?****Me:** About 12-15% but Supercritical plants are more complex to be installed and maintained. **I: Have you been placed earlier this year?****Me:** I was selected for L&T Technology Services in September. **I: Don’t you think you should have given this interview opportunity to some other unplaced batch mate?****Me:** Generally, the placed students are not allowed to sit for all the companies. TATA Power being a special case, since it written round was conducted before L&T recruitment, so I was allowed to sit. **I: Why TATA Power and not L&T Tech?****Me:** About 4 of my relatives work in NTPC and I have spent most of my vacations in and around Power Plants. There was always a curiosity as to what happens behind that plant walls. Most people take Mechanical because of their interest in Automobiles but my primary reason was Power Plants only. **I: Suppose you have planned a holiday with your family and an MD visit happens on that day only, what will you do?****Me:** I’ll try to judge the situation. As the MD himself will be coming, I think I will postpone my family program for a few days. However, if some Regional Manager would have been coming I would have asked myself that whether my presence is immediately required or not, then would have requested my boss to grant me leave. **I: What if boss had said no?****Me:** The person senior to me would always be much more experienced, so I would go with his decision but only after explaining all my concerns clearly to him. It is important that you make the person before you see things from your perspective. **I: Ok, but Mayukh you are willing to leave a white collar job for us (L&T) and we will turn your white shirt black in our Ash Plant. Won’t you regret it 4-5 years down the line?****Me:** My uncle was posted in Ash Plant for about 3 years and then worked near boilers too. So, I understand the situation a little bit. But, I am confident that I will be more satisfied near those extreme conditions than some white collar job because there is a strong passion for it. **I: What will you do tomorrow morning if you are rejected from this interview?Me:** Sir might relate to this (there was a gentleman from Bengal in the panel) but I am ardent fan of Swami Vivekananda. There was a beautiful quote that he said “Arise, Awake & stop not till the goal is reached”. So, would do that only. Will try to prepare for next thing from tomorrow onwards. **I2: Do you have any plans for higher studies?Me:** No sir (He was looking through my mark sheets), it may seem from my grades that I may be more theoretically inclined but I have always found the practical applications and their operations more interesting. Hence, I am looking forward to start working right away. **I3: Mayukh, you are good in studies, look smart and well spoken too. But you must have felt some short-comings which you must work upon.Me:** Till 2nd year in my engineering, I was kind of an introvert guy. My fluency was not that good too. After that, I felt I need to give importance to my soft & social skills as well. So, I started joining different societies and did an internship with an Education startup called SkillWiz. Gradually, due to them my personality developed and since you too have said so, I feel my work reaped off. **I: Good Mayukh, I am very much impressed by you but we are looking for individuals all across India from Mumbai, Chennai, etc. So, will tell your result to your college after considering them too.Me:**Sure Sir thanks. Last Date of application with normal fees has been extended up to 26th September The GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) 2020 has arrived and registrations have started on 2nd Sept’19.  Introduction GATE 2020 Exam is going to be conducted by IIT Delhi on multiple dates in the month of February 2020. With the Cognite Game Package, I got adept in quant, verbal ability, and logical reasoning in no time. By the end of my sixth semester, I reached Level 5.  I finally gained the confidence to solve mock exams. Until the second month, I was stuck in Level 1 but as soon as a third month seeped in, I jumped from Level 1 all the way up to level 3! “Hard work is the key to success.” This is the aphorism that Mohit Verma Tirumalaraju, a CSE student of Lovely Professional University, who got placed in Cognizant as a Program Analyst, after overcoming every hurdle in the most heroic way, lives by. Let’s listen to Verma’s story in his own words.  Not to mention, the optimum number of students this year went to play for Olympics from LPU itself and were accoladed by a number of renowned people, including Virat Kohli, this proves that LPU is braving formidable odds with its power-packed performance in every field.  “I had always been interested in computer science, but it wasn’t until my third year of college that I started thinking about what comes next. As an engineering student, you have to start considering your options because only very few companies hire fresh graduates with limited programming skills.  At this point, panic and confusion set in after realizing the lack of job opportunities for software engineers like me due to COVID – which means reduced company budgets and increased competition concerning jobs.  With all these factors going against me, combined with not having enough experience coding before graduating into an oversaturated industry field, everything seemed hopeless; however, determined nevertheless! Life is supposed to be a series of trials and tribulations hoping that the next one will go well. That’s what I thought when faced with such adversities until some miracle happened during our college seminar on campus. They discussed how SkillWiz would host a pilot batch for the upcoming placement drive for 3rd-year students.  It then dawned upon me that this could very well be my turn at success as I can easily brush up my knowledge of Java, Data Structure, DBMS, Aptitude, Algorithms, competitive coding, and Dynamic programming. I looked no further and enrolled myself in the program.  Here is a detailed illustration of how I prepared for my campus placements in six months:  First Month: During the first week, I invested a good amount of time exploring the platform, analyzing its features, and leveraging it in my best form. This was a win-win situation as I improved my Java programming skills and got a mini exposure to industry-level coding. Initially, it was difficult as we were only taught C and SQL in our college. And C, despite being object-oriented programming, isn’t dynamic in nature like Java, so learning Java was one of the best decisions.   Third Month: After rigorous learning and practice for two months, I finally gained the confidence to solve the mocks. Until the second month, I was stuck in Level 1, but as the third month seeped in, I jumped from Level 1 to Level 3, in no time. So, I thought of booking a 1-1 session with my mentor, an Industry Expert for the past ten years, to get some industry insights. His valuable guidance on different companies and their specific requirements were really useful. He also advised me to prepare for the HR rounds, as well. Although the HR round is usually a very basic one, and one need not prepare much for it, I didn’t wanna take any chances and further took help from my mentor over this. I also got my resume built with their Smart Resume feature. This automatically suggests the company-specific keywords and customizes your CV for different industries.  Finally, the placement drive began. I was nervous, but at the same time, I was confident enough to bag a good-paying job.
